Dear Diary,
Today, I’m continuing work on a short mystery set in Waikiki. Working title: “Murderous Beachy Keen.” So far, I love my cast of characters – but I feel like currently I know the murder victim better than the protagonist. So I need to work on that. Ahem.
I’ve never been to any of the Hawaiian islands, so I’ve been doing a fair amount of research, to get some solid detail for the story.
This morning, I did some reading specifically about how Waikiki smells. I need to know.
Frangipani flowers are all over the Hawaiian islands, but I’ve never seen one in real life before. I’ve no firsthand experience in how they might smell. Turns out different plumeria flowers have different smells, but it seems the one people tend to associate with the islands most are the white plumeria – which are said to smell a mixture of jasmine and vanilla.
Would love to experience that! Some day.
What strikes me about these flowers, in drawing them, is how they look so much like pinwheels. I wonder if any local vendors offer pinwheels shaped like frangipani. If they did, I think I would have to get one.
See you tomorrow,
KC
